Urologists, How Can We Better Educate Patients On CAUTIs And their Symptoms?

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are one of the top causes of infection worldwide. For every additional day a catheter is left in the body, the risk of developing a CAUTI increases by 3% to 7%.

Numerous BPH patients in our “Worst Prostate Ever” community are unaware of CAUTIs, and attribute their pain to the catheter placement. Left untreated, this can put them at risk of developing sepsis and other complications.

Due to Misconceptions About Treatments, BPH Patients May Not Comply with Their Medication Regimes

Due to misconceptions about the inconvenience and expectations about treatments, patients may not comply with their BPH medication regimes. To tackle this, researchers suggest adopting the Feelings, Ideas, Functions and Expectations (FIFE) approach to evaluate the patient’s illness experience and expectations.

Your patients may have different preferences based on their fears and expectations about BPH treatments. Adopting a patient-centered approach will help understand your patients better and improve their adherence to medication!

Urologists, How do You Ensure Your Patients Have their Stents Removed on Time?

Some kidney stone patients in our community have had prolonged indwelling stents due to insufficient insurance coverage. However, delayed stent removal can often lead to stent calcification, and they may end up experiencing more pain.

As forgotten stents are a matter of patient safety, experts advise that urologists schedule stent removals with patients before discharging them. Doing so may reduce the chances of them avoiding a follow-up visit because of financial constraints. This may minimize the incidence of retained stents and the subsequent discomfort of dealing with a calcified stent.

Stone Analyses and 24-hour Urine Evaluations are Essential in Helping Patients understand the Causes of their Kidney Stones

Stone analyses and 24-hour urine evaluations are essential in helping patients understand the causes of their #kidneystones. Yet, many in our kidney stone patient community have never undergone any screening tests.

A recent Consensus Group led by the 4th International Meeting of the Menarini Foundation on Nephrolithiasis concluded that urologists should routinely conduct urine and stone analyses. Additionally, the Group also urges urologists to adhere to urological standards when collecting test samples. By incorporating kidney stone and urine analyses in your treatment plans, you can better advise and educate your patients on appropriate lifestyle changes!
