Our History

Few success stories are as inspiring as that of Dornier MedTech, an organization rich in history, rich in innovative medical technology – and rich in customer care.  Dornier MedTech’s product portfolio didn’t happen by chance. People made it happen – people whose spirit of invention have fueled Dornier’s success.

Claude DornierDornier MedTech was founded on the innovative engineering and design principles of Claude Dornier. Born in Bavaria in 1884, Dornier graduated from the Technical University in Munich in 1907. Soon employed as a scientific adviser, Dornier began fundamental research and design. His early findings laid the cornerstone for the evolution of metal aircraft. During Dornier’s research performed in aerospace technology, he discovered a previously unexplained phenomenon. Pitting was taking place on the surface of an aircraft as it approached the sound barrier – a unique occurrence caused by the shock wave created in front of a droplet of moisture. This finding, coupled with the close collaboration among hospitals and Dornier’s development laboratories, resulted in his invention of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). To date, millions of people around the globe have been successfully treated using Dornier’s break-through discovery.

Through the years Dornier has continued to diversify its product offerings to include urology imaging tables, orthopedic shockwave devices and lasers.  In 1992, Dornier acquired MBB Medizintechnik, a German company with a long history in lasers.  This led to further development of lasers for surgical and aesthetic applications.  As a global leader, Dornier continues to develop innovative solutions to benefit both the patient and physician.
